Lexical contact during speech perception: A connectionist model

چکیده
A connectionist architecture comprised of cell assemblies was developed and applied to the problem of speech perception at the phonemic and lexical levels. The problem addressed involved a disagreement amongst theorists over the possible sources of lexical priming effects. Speech was encoded in the model as the temporal activity of phoneme units that are connected to higher-level word assemblies. The lexical layer was topographically organized based upon similarity of phonemic structure. Lateral inhibition at the lexical level was shown to be both necessary and sufficient to support results from phonological priming experiments involving human

A Connectionist Model of Competition at the Phonological-lexical Interface during Speech Perception an Honors Project for the Departments of Computer Science and Psychology
A connectionist architecture comprised of Hebbian cell assemblies was developed and applied to the problem of speech recognition at the phonemic-lexical interface. Speech was encoded in the model as the sequential activation of phoneme representations connected to higher-level linguistic structures. An architectural decision concerning the spatial organization of the top-level lexical map was s...
متن کاملA Connectionist Model of Phonological Representation in Speech Perception
A number of recent studies hove exomined the effects of phonological variation on the perception of speech. These studies show thot both the lexical representations of words and the mechanisms of lexical access are organized so that natural, systematic variation is tolerated by the perceptual system, while o general intolerance of random deviation is maintained. Lexical abstraction distinguishe...
متن کاملPerspectives on Syllables, Stress, and Interactions in Speech Perception: Experimental and Connectionist Approaches
This dissertation includes three series of experiments and a review of connectionist models in the area of speech perception. The issues of concern in the experimental sections are (a) the importance of word onsets and stressed syllables for lexical activation, (b) the role of syllabic structure in the online perception of English, and (c) whether processing at the lexical and pragmatic levels ...

متن کاملSpeech perception at the interface of neurobiology and linguistics.
Speech perception consists of a set of computations that take continuously varying acoustic waveforms as input and generate discrete representations that make contact with the lexical representations stored in long-term memory as output. Because the perceptual objects that are recognized by the speech perception enter into subsequent linguistic computation, the format that is used for lexical r...
